A couple from Kazakhstan is facing charges of fraud after allegedly using hidden cameras and earpieces to win approximately A$1.2 million (around £593,000; $784,000) from a casino in Sydney, Australia. The New South Wales Police reported that Dilnoza Israilova, 36, was observed wearing a small camera disguised within her clothing while at the casino in Barangaroo.
Following their arrest, police found additional devices, including “magnetised probes” and a mirror attachment for a mobile phone, which they suspect were used to manipulate card games. Both Israilova and her husband, Alisherykhoja Israilov, 44, have been charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage and are currently in custody.
The couple arrived in Sydney from Kazakhstan in October and applied for casino membership immediately upon their arrival. Over the following weeks, they reportedly visited the casino, which is believed to be Crown Sydney, accumulating significant winnings that raised suspicions among staff. Their activities came to light when casino personnel apprehended them on a Thursday, following weeks of unusual winning patterns.
It was reported that the surveillance devices were linked to the couple’s mobile phones, providing them with real-time footage of their gaming tables. They were also alleged to have utilized hidden earpieces to receive instructions during card games.
Authorities confirmed that they are not seeking anyone else connected to the alleged fraudulent activities. A subsequent search of their accommodation revealed other gambling paraphernalia, valuable jewelry, and €2,000 (approximately £1,750; $2,320) in cash. Both appeared in court and were denied bail. Israilova’s next court date is set for February, while Israilov is scheduled to appear on December 11.
