Joe Biden undergoes skin cancer surgery

Former U.S. President Joe Biden recently underwent skin cancer surgery, according to a statement from his spokeswoman. The procedure conducted was Mohs surgery, which involves removing skin until no cancerous cells are detected. Specific details about the surgery have not been disclosed.

In the days leading up to the procedure, Biden, who is 82 years old, was seen with a wound on the right side of his head. Earlier in 2023, he had a cancerous skin lesion removed from his chest during a routine health assessment. Additionally, in May, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones.

Following his prostate cancer diagnosis, Biden expressed on social media the shared challenges many face with cancer, stating, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.” He has a history of previously having non-melanoma skin cancers removed prior to his presidency.

Since leaving the White House in January, Biden has reduced his public appearances significantly. The Biden family has a long-standing commitment to cancer advocacy, significantly shaped by the experience of losing their son, Beau, to brain cancer in 2015.
