Jet2 has announced plans to commence flights from Gatwick Airport for the first time. The airline has secured slots for six aircraft at the West Sussex airport, attributed to the recent release of additional capacity.
The introduction of these flights is expected to generate hundreds of jobs in the region, including roles for pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and ground operations personnel, according to a spokesperson for Jet2. Initially, the airline will offer services to 29 destinations, which include locations in mainland Spain, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Malta, Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Cyprus.
The inaugural flight from Gatwick Airport is set to depart for Tenerife, Spain, on 26 March of next year. Gatwick will become the 14th base for Jet2 in the UK, hosting five of its single-aisle, twin-engine aircraft, with an additional plane stationed overseas.
Jet2’s chief executive, Steve Heapy, characterized this development as a significant milestone, while Gatwick Airport’s chief executive, Pierre-Hugues Schmit, expressed enthusiasm about the new opportunities this brings for passengers in the South East and beyond.
