Japanese brewing giant Asahi hit by cyber-attack

Asahi, the prominent Japanese brewing company, has experienced a cyber-attack leading to a “systems failure” that has disrupted its shipping and customer service operations. The company has clarified that there is no confirmed incidence of personal customer data being leaked and noted that its European operations, including those in the UK, remain unaffected.

The cyber-attack has resulted in the suspension of order and shipment activities within Japan, along with a halt in customer service operations. Asahi, which produces well-known beer brands such as Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, and Grolsch, also owns Fullers, a brewery located in West London.

In a public statement, Asahi apologized to customers and business partners, indicating that they are actively investigating the cause of the incident. However, the company does not have an estimated timeline for when normal operations will resume. They emphasized that the impact of the system failure is confined to their operations in Japan.

Despite this disruption, Asahi assured that none of its manufacturing processes in Europe, including beer supply in the UK, are affected by the cyber-attack. The recent incident aligns with a broader trend, as numerous businesses in the UK, including notable companies such as Harrods, Jaguar Land Rover, Marks and Spencer, and the Co-op, have faced similar cyber security challenges in recent months.

The BBC has reached out to Asahi for additional information regarding the specific effects of this incident on their Japanese operations.
