OpenAI is scheduled to host a livestream today at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT that is expected to provide insights into its rumored web browser. This announcement aligns with a recent teaser posted on OpenAI’s X account, which displayed a series of browser tabs.
Reports from Reuters in July indicated that OpenAI is in the process of developing an AI web browser that would incorporate its Operator AI agent. This technology could enable the browser to perform various tasks, such as booking restaurant reservations and autofilling forms.
Additionally, the browser is anticipated to feature a ChatGPT interface, facilitating user interaction with the chatbot directly within the browser, rather than requiring access through the ChatGPT website. It is also expected to be built on the Chromium platform, similar to the engines that power Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.
The market for AI browsers is becoming increasingly competitive. Google is integrating its Gemini technology into Chrome, while Perplexity has introduced its Comet AI browser. The Browser Company, which recently gained significant investment from Atlassian, is also entering the field. Meanwhile, Microsoft has been adding an AI-powered Copilot Mode to its Edge browser, positioning it as a competitor in this new landscape.
Despite the evolving market, Microsoft has decided not to create a standalone AI browser. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, stated last month that the company’s approach involves enhancing the Edge browser to function as an “agentic browser,” rather than launching a full-scale AI web browser akin to that of The Browser Company.
