Israel conducted an airstrike in Doha, Qatar, targeting senior members of Hamas on September 9, 2025. A Hamas official indicated that the operation aimed at members of the group’s negotiating team during a meeting, but it remains unclear if there were any casualties. Images from the scene depict significant damage to a residential building located in the Katara district.
The Israeli military justifies the strike by accusing the Hamas leaders present of being responsible for the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and of facilitating subsequent actions in Gaza. In response, Qatar condemned the strike, labeling it a “cowardly attack” that contravenes international laws and jeopardizes the safety of both Qatari citizens and residents. The foreign ministry of Qatar emphasized concerns over the violation of its sovereignty.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the action, calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office described the operation as an independent initiative by Israel, stating responsibility for the action rests solely with the Israeli government.
Reports suggest that the individuals targeted included Khalil al-Hayya, a chief negotiator for Hamas, and Zaher Jabarin, a leader based in the West Bank. A senior Israeli official mentioned that the results of the strike were still pending and noted a consensus among the political and security leadership regarding the operation.
The airstrike aligns with ongoing tensions following a deadly attack by Hamas on southern Israel, which resulted in about 1,200 fatalities and over 250 hostage situations. In the aftermath of conflicts escalating from this incident, casualty counts in Gaza have reportedly exceeded 64,000 according to health officials in the region.
