Israel struck Gaza’s Nasser Hospital four times, analysis finds

On Monday, Israel reportedly struck Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza at least four times, according to an analysis of video footage conducted by BBC Verify. The initial reports indicated two strikes, with the first occurring at 10:08 local time and a second nine minutes later, targeting first responders and journalists at the scene. However, further examination revealed that the hospital was actually hit multiple times, with two staircases being impacted nearly simultaneously in the initial wave.

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did not allow independent international journalists into Gaza, but BBC Verify used videos from a local freelancer and online eyewitness accounts to identify the additional strikes. The first strike killed journalist Hussam Al-Masri, who was broadcasting live for Reuters. Following this, more footage showed smoke and damage at both staircases, as well as testimony from emergency workers regarding hits to the hospital’s operating department.

Newly emerged footage indicates that while first responders were gathered, two separate projectiles struck the hospital almost simultaneously. Experts analyzing this footage suggested the munitions may have been Lahat missiles, which can be launched from various platforms. Speculation arose about whether the strikes came from a single tank, as the rapid succession of the hits implied multiple tanks may have engaged in the assault.

In response to the attack, the IDF’s narrative has evolved. Initially mentioning a strike in the hospital vicinity, they later acknowledged responsibility while expressing regret for the “tragic mishap.” An initial inquiry suggested a Hamas camera was targeted, but no evidence was presented. Allegations persist that the attack might violate international law, particularly regarding protections for medical facilities.

The current conflict has seen increased casualties, with at least 62,900 reported deaths in Gaza and notable fatalities among journalists. Israel’s military actions come in the wake of the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in numerous casualties in southern Israel.
