The European Commission has raised concerns regarding Meta’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram, stating that they impose “confusing” barriers for users attempting to report illegal content and contest moderation decisions. The findings suggest that these platforms may utilize “dark patterns,” or deceptive design elements, which could obstruct the prompt removal of harmful materials such as child sexual abuse content and terrorist propaganda.
In addition, the Commission has identified that both Meta and TikTok have “burdensome procedures and tools” that limit researchers’ access to public data. This raises questions about the transparency and accessibility of data related to content moderation on these platforms.
As a result of these findings, both companies could face fines of up to six percent of their global annual revenue. They have the option to contest the European Union’s conclusions or take corrective actions before the Commission issues a final ruling on the matter.
