Indiegogo is set to introduce a new “Express Crowdfunding” campaign format that allows creators to begin shipping their products during the campaign rather than waiting until it concludes. This change is a response to recent updates following Indiegogo’s transition to new technology from its owner, Gamefound, a platform focused on board game crowdfunding.
According to Indiegogo spokesperson Maciej Kuc, the new technology was designed with the expectation that campaigns would allow for at least a two-week gap between fundraising and the pledge manager phase, where orders are finalized and shipping addresses are collected. However, this shift in approach could alter the traditional timeline for crowdfunding campaigns.
An example highlighting the challenges of the existing system is Ayaneo’s campaign for the Pocket AIR Mini retro gaming handheld. The company had aimed to start shipping by the end of November but encountered delays due to “platform policy requirements.” Ayaneo indicated it would not be able to collect shipping addresses until December 5th because it must first transition into the Pledge Manager phase, a process that can take several days. Consequently, shipments are now expected to begin around December 10th.
Kuc mentioned that the new Express Crowdfunding format is anticipated to become available in early February. This upcoming change raises questions about how effectively it will address delays that have often plagued campaigns in the past.
