Colorado authorities are currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death of journalist Hunter S. Thompson, two decades after it was officially classified as a suicide. This review was initiated at the request of Thompson’s widow. Thompson, who was 67 years old at the time of his death, passed away in February 2005 at his residence in Woody Creek, located north of Aspen, Colorado.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced that it is conducting a “case review” of the original investigation from 2005. Importantly, the CBI clarified that this review is not prompted by any new evidence. Sheriff Michael Buglione expressed the aim of the review is to provide a thorough and transparent evaluation, potentially offering closure to Thompson’s family and the public.
Thompson was a notable and influential figure in journalism, contributing to several prominent platforms including Rolling Stone, Playboy, and ESPN. He authored several celebrated works, including “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” which was adapted into a film featuring Johnny Depp. Other notable publications include “Hells Angels” and “Generation of Swine.”
While no timeline has been provided for the conclusion of the investigation, officials stated they will share updates as the review progresses. Thompson died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on the phone with his wife, with his son discovering his body in the kitchen afterward. The original investigation concluded that there was no evidence of foul play.
