Anthropic has introduced a new capability for its Claude AI assistant, called “Skills,” aimed at enhancing the practicality of artificial intelligence within enterprise environments. Unveiled on Thursday, this feature allows users to create folders containing instructions, code scripts, and reference materials that Claude can load automatically when needed. This innovation represents a significant progression in customizing AI assistants, enabling organizations to implement reusable, domain-specific knowledge rather than relying on individual prompts.
According to Mahesh Murag from Anthropic, the Skills architecture utilizes “progressive disclosure.” Initially, Claude only sees the names and brief descriptions of the available skills and subsequently decides which information to access based on the task. This distinguishes Skills from previous customization methods like prompt engineering or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) by allowing Claude to autonomously navigate a filesystem and utilize pertinent resources.
Anthropic, which recently secured a valuation of $183 billion, anticipates substantial growth, projecting its annual revenue could reach approximately $26 billion by 2026. The company has recently reported a rise in revenue, significantly attributed to the enterprise adoption of its AI coding tools, amidst strong competition from OpenAI.
Early adopters such as Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten and the design platform Canva have begun using Skills to enhance productivity in finance workflows and customize AI agent capabilities, respectively. Reports from Rakuten indicate substantial efficiency improvements, with finance tasks now completed in a fraction of the time they once required.
The implementation of Skills also raises questions about governance and access control for enterprise IT departments. Anthropic has established administrative controls allowing oversight of Skills utilization within organizations. However, the current system lacks granular access controls, which may be a concern for some businesses regarding data security and skill execution.
Anthropic aims to make Skills accessible to users with various technical backgrounds, providing a “skill-creator” tool that assists non-technical users in developing new skills. This accessibility, alongside the potential integration across multiple platforms, positions Skills as a noteworthy development in the evolving landscape of AI technology.
