Houthis confirm their prime minister killed in Israeli strikes

The Houthi rebel movement in Yemen has announced the death of its self-proclaimed Prime Minister, Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi, following Israeli air strikes in Sanaa earlier in the week. Additional senior Houthi officials were reportedly killed during these strikes, which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) characterized as targeting a Houthi “military target.” However, specific details regarding the targets have not been disclosed by the IDF.

The Houthis, who have held significant control in north-western Yemen since 2014 after displacing the internationally recognized government, stated that Rahawi died along with several other ministers. Reports from Saudi Arabian media suggest that among the deceased are the Houthi foreign minister and those responsible for justice, youth and sports, social affairs, and labor. The Houthi leadership indicated that other ministers suffered various degrees of injuries due to the air strikes.

In light of Rahawi’s death, Muhammad Ahmed Miftah has been designated to take over his responsibilities. Rahawi had been in office since August 2024.

The IDF has not yet provided public commentary on these recent developments. The backdrop to this incident involves ongoing military actions since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The Houthis have previously launched missiles at Israel and targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, claiming these actions are meant to show support for the Palestinians. In response, Israel has conducted air strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, including recent strikes tied to a Houthi missile attack that Israel alleged involved cluster munitions.
