Honor’s Robot Phone concept features a fold-out camera arm

Honor has revealed a concept device referred to as the “Robot Phone,” featuring an AI-enabled, gimbal-mounted camera that can unfold from the rear of the phone to capture photos and videos in various directions.

Currently, the device has only been showcased in CGI format through a teaser video, with no physical prototype available. It resembles a standard smartphone, albeit with a thicker design. The device is marked with an alpha symbol, representative of the company’s “Alpha Plan” corporate vision, and its distinguishing feature is a prominent, dual-part camera module.

The camera arm is designed to unfold, accompanied by a sound effect described as a “cartoonish giggle” in the promotional video. It has the ability to flip upward for selfies and can maneuver to shoot from multiple angles autonomously, suggesting advancements over previous models like the 2019 Asus Zenfone 6, which had a flipping camera mechanism.

The camera appears similar to those found on devices like the DJI Osmo Pocket, though Honor’s presentation implies that it incorporates advanced AI capabilities for tasks such as framing photographs and engaging with its environment. Honor has stated that the Robot Phone aims to be more than just a device; it envisions the phone as an emotional companion that adapts to users’ needs and enhances their experiences.

Further details regarding the Robot Phone are expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next spring. This announcement marked the conclusion of Honor’s recent event introducing its two Magic 8 flagship phones, which will soon be available in China and are slated for an international launch later this year.
