Farmers in the UK’s driest regions are experiencing significant reductions in crop yields due to ongoing heatwave conditions. Reports indicate that broccoli growers are facing reductions of over 50% in their yields, with adverse effects on both quantity and quality. As a result, consumers may encounter smaller vegetables in supermarkets.
A grower from Herefordshire expressed concerns about potential supply shortages if the dry conditions persist. The British Growers Association has confirmed that supplies of brassicas, including broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, are currently “tight.” However, they suggested that more favorable harvests in wetter areas could help maintain food supply levels.
The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has projected that the UK may be on track for its sixth or seventh worst harvest since record-keeping began 40 years ago. Areas with low rainfall and river levels, particularly those growing crops in lighter soils, are experiencing significant shortfalls. Ben Andrews, an organic farmer in Herefordshire, noted that shoppers may need to adjust their expectations regarding vegetable sizes in stores. He pointed out that even importing vegetables could be challenging this season.
Jack Ward, the chief executive of the British Growers Association, stated that climatic challenges are recurring for growers, but shortfalls from some suppliers are offset by increased crop production in cooler, wetter regions. He mentioned concerns about water supplies, especially for crops reliant on irrigation.
Martin Williams, a local farmer and chair of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) in Herefordshire, reported severe impacts on his cereal yields and noted a considerable decline in his potato and grass crops, describing the conditions as “devastatingly dry.” He is now reconsidering his farming strategies.
The NFU has described this year’s weather as “unprecedented,” highlighting the varied harvest experiences across the country. Farmers in regions receiving adequate rainfall report better-than-expected yields, while others are facing notable declines.
