HBO Max now lets you rate shows and movies

HBO Max is introducing a new rating system designed to collect viewer feedback on shows and movies. This feature enables users to express their preferences by selecting options labeled “Love,” “Like,” or “Not For Me.” The streaming platform plans to adjust its recommendations based on these ratings.

When users select “Love,” HBO Max will display related titles in a dedicated “Because You Love” carousel on the homepage. In contrast, titles marked as “Not For Me” will be less prioritized in a user’s recommendations. The rating system was initially tested last year as part of HBO Max’s efforts to enhance its personalization features. It bears similarities to the rating mechanisms employed by Netflix, which include thumbs-up, double thumbs-up, and thumbs-down options.

This new rating feature will be available across various platforms, including the HBO Max app on the web, mobile devices, and smart TVs. Viewers can provide ratings by clicking the “Rate” button found on a title’s description page or by selecting an option that appears after finishing a show or movie. This rollout is intended to help the service better tailor content suggestions to individual user preferences.
