Apple has launched its new iPhone Air, which will not include a traditional SIM card, sparking discussions about the future of SIM technology. Users are accustomed to using physical SIM cards, but the new model will operate exclusively with an embedded SIM (eSIM). This technology allows users to change networks or plans without the need for a SIM card tray.
Analyst Kester Mann from CCS Insight suggested that Apple’s move signifies a significant shift in smartphone technology, possibly indicating the decline of the physical SIM card. This raises questions about how long it will be before physical SIM cards are phased out entirely and the implications for smartphone users.
The term SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module, which connects users to their mobile network, enabling calls, texts, and data usage. While eSIMs have gained popularity and are available in newer phones, the iPhone Air is the first globally available model to feature an eSIM-only design. Although the latest iPhone 17 series will also have eSIM-only versions in some markets, they will still retain physical SIM slots in most regions.
Other major manufacturers, such as Samsung and Google, continue to offer both types of SIMs. However, experts predict a steady shift towards eSIM technology. According to CCS Insight’s forecasts, the number of smartphones using eSIMs is expected to rise from 1.3 billion in 2024 to 3.1 billion by 2030.
Paolo Pescatore, a technology analyst, remarked that removing physical SIM trays could lead to design advantages, such as more internal space for larger batteries. However, the transition may pose challenges for older consumers or those less comfortable with technology, highlighting the need for clear communication about eSIM usage.
