Halo Studios is working on a significant project to mark the 25th anniversary of the Halo franchise with the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved in 2026. This game serves as a complete remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, which debuted in 2001 alongside the first Xbox. The remake features a fully rebuilt campaign with enhanced 4K visuals, new weapons, vehicles, a four-player online co-op mode, and additional story content.
Halo: Campaign Evolved will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and for the first time on PlayStation 5. A prerelease demo of the mission “The Silent Cartographer” showcases improvements, including modernized cinematics, voice lines, and upgraded visuals and animations. The game incorporates Unreal Engine 5 technology, leading to a visual overhaul. Changes also include a new seating arrangement for the Warthog vehicle, enhancing gameplay dynamics.
Developers have accessed original assets and code, allowing for deeper integration of new features and enhancements while maintaining the game’s original feel. They have also re-recorded lines with the original voice actors, contributing to the quality of the sound and dialogue. The game is designed to respect the original while inviting new players, with added elements such as three bonus missions that serve as a prequel setup.
New gameplay elements include mechanics for sprinting and enhanced AI behaviors, alongside a variety of gameplay modifiers called “skulls.” The multiplayer component, a hallmark of the Halo series, is notably absent in this remake, as it focuses solely on the campaign experience. Despite this limitation, the developers believe the new features will pave the way for future Halo titles. Halo: Campaign Evolved will be available on launch through Game Pass Ultimate and will support cross-platform progression and online multiplayer.
