A grizzly bear is currently unrestrained after attacking a school group in Bella Coola, British Columbia, resulting in 11 injuries, including two critically. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon along a walking trail, prompting local authorities to advise residents to stay indoors as armed officers search for the bear.
As of Friday afternoon, four individuals remain hospitalized, according to the British Columbia Health Services Authority. Reports indicate that a male teacher absorbed much of the bear’s assault, while adult group members used bear spray in their attempts to protect the children. One parent, Veronica Schooner, noted that her 10-year-old son was part of the school group but was not directly attacked. He reportedly came close enough to feel the bear’s fur as it charged at others.
British Columbia Emergency Health Services confirmed that two people suffered critical injuries, while two others sustained serious wounds; seven more were treated at the scene. Victims required transport to a nearby airport for airlift to the closest hospital.
The affected group belonged to Acwsalcta School, an institution operated by the indigenous Nuxalk Nation, located approximately 700 kilometers northwest of Vancouver. In their social media announcement, the Nuxalk Nation emphasized the need for community safety, advising residents to stay indoors and avoid the highway. The school has been temporarily closed, and officials are providing counseling services to students and staff affected by the incident. Further questions arise regarding the bear’s behavior and the measures taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
