Thailand’s GPO Leads in HIV Prevention
The Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) in Thailand has achieved significant progress in HIV prevention, particularly in reducing mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy. As a result, Thailand has become the first country in the Asia Pacific region and the second globally to eliminate HIV transmission during pregnancy.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an essential component in this endeavor, as it prevents the replication of HIV after exposure by maintaining effective drug levels in the bloodstream when taken as directed. The GPO currently produces 23 different anti-viral medications, including PrEP.
Looking ahead, the GPO is working with international partners to develop long-acting injectable PrEP, which would require only two injections each year for effective HIV prevention. Additionally, the GPO is collaborating with Thailand’s main healthcare systems—the 30-baht universal healthcare scheme, the Social Security Fund, and the government healthcare system—to facilitate free access to these anti-viral medications.
As of now, a total of:
- 322,335 individuals under the 30-baht universal healthcare scheme have been receiving treatment since April 2007,
- 171,793 individuals covered by the Social Security Fund have been receiving treatment since 2004,
- 25,054 government officials are also receiving GPO medications.
