Paul Nowak, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has emphasized the importance of the government’s Employment Rights Bill, which is set to become law soon. Concerns have been raised that the bill may be weakened following changes in the cabinet, including the exit of Angela Rayner and the sacking of Justin Madders as employment minister. Nowak echoed sentiments from union representatives, stating that it would be a significant error for the government to dilute the bill, which aims to enhance protections against unfair dismissal and eliminate zero-hours contracts deemed exploitative.
The government has expressed strong support for the bill, with a spokesperson stating that it represents a major advancement in workers’ rights over the past generation. Nonetheless, rising concerns were voiced at the TUC conference amid fears that recent ministerial departures could delay or impact the legislation’s implementation, particularly given the current strains on the economy. Certain amendments proposed by the House of Lords, such as altering employment tribunal processes and guaranteed hours, have raised alarm among unions. However, the government is reportedly preparing to overturn these amendments.
Additionally, Nowak called on the government to support working-class communities further and urged the full delivery of the Employment Rights Bill. He also proposed lifting the two-child benefit cap, suggesting it could be funded by a windfall tax on bank profits.
Sharon Graham, leader of the Unite union, conveyed similar warnings to the Labour Party about the necessity for immediate action to secure union support, hinting at potential financial repercussions. She indicated that there might be an opportunity for her union members to decide on their affiliation with Labour in the future, emphasizing that many workers feel the party is not adequately representing their interests.
Labour has reiterated its commitment to enhancing workers’ rights and improving living standards, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledging a focus on delivering on governmental promises. The government has yet to provide comments regarding the current concerns surrounding the Employment Rights Bill.
