Google AI Studio has introduced a significant update to its coding interface, designed to facilitate app development for users at all skill levels, including novices. The revamped Build tab is now accessible at ai.studio/build, allowing users to experiment with creating applications without needing to provide payment information initially. While the platform is free to start, certain advanced features, like Veo 3.1 and Cloud Run deployment, do necessitate a paid API key.
The updated Build tab enhances the process of “vibe coding.” Users select from Google’s AI models, with Gemini 2.5 Pro set as the default, and describe their desired application. The system then assembles the required components using Gemini’s APIs. Features that can be incorporated include various AI models such as Nano Banana for lightweight tasks, and Veo for video analysis.
The interactive editor allows users to modify app components directly, providing a traditional code-assist interface alongside a code editor displaying the full application source. Files can be edited, saved to GitHub, downloaded, or deployed through Cloud Run if needed.
A notable feature is the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, which offers users randomized app concepts and configurations. Examples include map-based chatbots and trivia games with customizable AI hosts. This feature encourages exploration and creativity.
In a practical demonstration, users were able to create a fully functional web application in 65 seconds with features such as die customization and an animated rolling effect. The platform generated a complete codebase that could be iterated upon easily.
Moreover, Google AI Studio now includes context-aware feature suggestions for iterative improvements. Users can refine their projects continuously, blending automated and manual enhancements.
This accessible coding environment aims to democratize app development, allowing both inexperienced and experienced users to build applications. The recent update is part of a broader series of upcoming announcements from Google AI Studio.
