Brad Lee, the manager of The Nippy Chippy in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, has implemented an AI answering service to streamline order-taking as a cost-saving measure. Rising fish prices, increased living costs, and higher wages and National Insurance contributions prompted this decision. By using AI, Lee aims to eliminate the need for a dedicated employee for phone orders.
Lee noted that the AI system has been operational for about six months, during which it has garnered mixed feedback from customers. He claims that he is the only fish and chip shop owner currently utilizing this technology. He emphasized that many customers appreciate the efficiency of the AI service, which allows them to place orders without being put on hold.
Additionally, Lee pointed out that customers often become frustrated when local shops fail to answer their calls or keep them waiting. The AI service aims to address this issue by enabling customers to call in their orders directly for collection or delivery. He expressed confidence that, despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and current economic pressures, fish and chip shops will continue to thrive amidst the cost of living crisis.
