Global Virus Network outlines priorities as Marburg virus emerges in Ethiopia

The Global Virus Network (GVN) has announced a confirmed outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in southern Ethiopia, marking the country’s first known instance of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the outbreak on November 14, 2025, following initial cases of viral hemorrhagic fever in Jinka town, South Omo Region. As of November 20, 2025, six cases and three deaths have been confirmed, with an additional three deaths under investigation. A total of 206 contacts are currently being monitored.

In response to the outbreak, immediate efforts will focus on identifying infected individuals, implementing isolation measures, and preventing further virus transmission. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or therapeutics for MVD, underscoring the importance of surveillance and contact tracing.

Professor Pontiano Kaleebu emphasized the critical need for vaccine research and therapeutic development. Studies are ongoing to assess potential vaccine candidates and treatments used in previous outbreaks. Additionally, investigations into the origin of the virus are being prioritized to understand local reservoirs and potential cross-border transmission.

The Africa CDC is assisting Ethiopia’s response by providing diagnostic support and bio-surveillance. The proximity of the outbreak to the borders with South Sudan and Kenya raises concerns about regional spread, highlighting the need for enhanced surveillance systems across the area.
