KOTA KINABALU, Sept 4 — Datuk Haji Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, the information chief of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, has denied claims regarding a viral WhatsApp screenshot purportedly involving him. He characterized the message as a malicious attempt to damage his reputation and that of his party. In a statement made on Wednesday, Nizam confirmed he has filed a police report at the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters regarding the matter.
Nizam, who serves as Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and is the Apas assemblyman, labeled the situation as “dirty politics,” citing a previous similar allegation against Kunak assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif. He has also instructed his lawyer to send a letter of demand to an individual identified as Atan, who he claims is responsible for the defamatory content.
He emphasized the importance of political discourse being grounded in facts rather than falsehoods. Nizam also urged authorities, including the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, to take action against those involved in spreading the alleged misinformation.
Furthermore, he acknowledged a recent gathering in Tawau on August 31 for “Justice for Zara Qairina,” respecting the community’s rights to express their concerns. He noted that while such gatherings are meaningful, they should not cross legal boundaries, and he urged that public focus remains on seeking truth and safety solutions for students.
- Why it matters: This incident highlights the ongoing issue of misinformation in politics, which can significantly affect public perception and community stability.
- It raises questions about the legal implications surrounding defamation and the responsibilities of political figures in maintaining public order and trust.
- The latest: Nizam has filed a police report and is pursuing legal action against the individual believed to be responsible for the defamatory message.
