A helicopter crew in France has survived after their aircraft crashed into a lake while collecting water to combat wildfires. The incident occurred in Rosporden, located in north-western France. Eyewitness footage shows the helicopter descending towards the water with a water collection vessel before seemingly losing control and landing in the lake.
Local authorities reported that the pilot and an officer aboard the helicopter were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, and there were no fatalities. In response to the incident, Mayor Michel Loussouarn of Rosporden stated on social media that measures have been implemented to mitigate potential pollution in the lake.
The incident raises questions about the safety protocols in place for water collection operations during wildfire efforts.
