Freed Israeli hostage Evyatar David who was forced to dig own grave is ‘growing back to his old self’, father says

Evyatar David, a 24-year-old Israeli hostage released from Hamas captivity, is experiencing an improvement in health following his discharge from the hospital. His father, Avishai David, reported his son’s condition is “improving every day,” emphasizing his return to vitality. Evyatar, along with two other hostages, was welcomed home in Kfar Saba after their release as part of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement.

In August, prior to Evyatar’s release, a video released by Hamas depicted him in a deteriorated state, leading to widespread condemnation. His family described this portrayal as a form of cruelty, with his brother calling attention to the severe conditions Evyatar faced during captivity. In the video, Evyatar mentioned he had not eaten for several days and was seen digging what he believed to be his grave.

Dr. Michal Shteinman, director at Rabin Medical Centre, noted that while the hostages bear visible signs of trauma from their ordeal, they also displayed resilience. He described their physical condition as indicative of “metabolic trauma,” yet reaffirmed that they returned stronger than before.

Evyatar was abducted during a Hamas-led assault on the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. His release, along with 19 other living hostages, was part of the first phase of the ceasefire deal. In return, Israel released 250 Palestinian prisoners and several detainees. The conflict has seen substantial casualties on both sides, with over 1,200 people killed in the initial attack and over 68,000 reported deaths in Gaza since the IDF initiated military operations in response.
