A free café has been established in Highworth, Wiltshire, aiming to reduce loneliness by fostering connections among residents. The Warm and Welcome Wednesday Café operates monthly, organized by volunteers from the Highworth Community Larder, an initiative dedicated to redistributing food that would have been wasted.
The café takes place on the third Wednesday of each month at the Council Rooms on Gilberts Lane, offering companionship, along with complimentary drinks and cake from 09:30 to 11:00 BST. The room is provided at no charge by Highworth Town Council.
Alison Durrant, a volunteer involved in the project, noted that the café also serves as a resource center, offering advice on various issues, including financial matters. It has become a supportive space for community members seeking both social interaction and practical assistance.
The Highworth Community Larder was initiated several years ago after volunteers recognized the surplus produce from local allotments that could be used to support those in need. The group aligned with national networks, such as the Community Fridge Network, to enhance their outreach. Additionally, a local primary school contributed space for storing food produced from allotments and local supermarkets.
Durrant reported that the initiative has grown significantly since its inception, attracting around 100 visitors each week, up from an initial 30. This increase highlights the community’s response to the need for social gatherings and assistance in the area.
