Free school uniform on offer all year at Devon charity

A recycling charity based in Devon is providing free school uniform items at its branches throughout the year. The initiative aims to help alleviate the financial pressures faced by families, particularly in light of rising living costs. The most recent branch to implement this program is Refurnish’s shop in Tiverton.

Shop manager Figgy Chambers noted that many customers have expressed their gratitude for the service, emphasizing the high costs associated with purchasing school uniforms. She mentioned that securing these items mid-year can be challenging, which is why the charity has decided to offer uniforms year-round. In addition to school uniforms, the shop also provides children’s toys, books, DVDs, and clothing at no cost, further assisting families during the summer holiday period.

A similar program was initiated at the Refurnish location in South Molton five years prior, and the success of that scheme inspired staff at the Tiverton branch to adopt a similar approach. The customer response has been overwhelmingly positive. For instance, eight-year-old Isla visited the store with her mother seeking new shoes. Upon discovering the availability of free items, she expressed enthusiasm for adding other supplies to her collection, including pencils, pens, a hairband, and toys for her younger sister.

This initiative raises questions about the growing need for support services amidst current economic challenges, as well as the role of community organizations in addressing these needs.
