Forty-two individuals, comprising Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, have died following the overturning of a bus in South Africa, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on Sunday night while the bus was navigating a mountainous stretch of the N1 highway in Limpopo province. Officials indicated that the bus veered off the road along a steep mountain pass and subsequently fell down an embankment.
The death toll includes seven children, leading South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to express condolences, describing the incident as a tragedy that impacts not only South Africa but also Zimbabwe and Malawi. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the crash, though details remain unclear.
Reports indicate that the bus was en route from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape; however, the total number of passengers on board at the time of the accident is not known, nor is the bus’s capacity. In addition to the fatalities, authorities reported that 49 people sustained injuries as a result of the incident, which included 18 women and 17 men among the deceased.
Government officials, including Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, are expected to visit the crash site and meet with injured passengers. Further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash are pending as investigations continue.
