Firmus gas prices to drop by 8.5% in Greater Belfast area

Firmus Energy has announced an 8.5% price reduction for all domestic customers in the Greater Belfast Network area, effective from November 1. This change is expected to lower annual bills by an average of £107 for approximately 42,000 customers.

This announcement follows a recent decision to implement a nearly 8% price decrease for customers in the Ten Towns area, which will also take effect next month. Firmus supplies natural gas to over 113,000 customers throughout Northern Ireland.

The Greater Belfast Network area, which is not subject to a review process by the Utility Regulator, includes locations such as Belfast, Lisburn, Bangor, Holywood, and several towns in east Down. In contrast, the Ten Towns area encompasses Antrim, Armagh, Banbridge, Ballymena, Coleraine, Craigavon, Newry, Londonderry, and more than 25 other surrounding towns and villages.

Ryan Miskimmin, Sales Director at Firmus, stated that the savings from the price reduction are being passed on to customers. He noted that these changes will benefit thousands as the colder months approach, providing financial relief alongside the utility’s offerings of consistent heat and instant hot water.

Raymond Gormley, head of energy policy at the Consumer Council, acknowledged that these tariff decreases reflect a downward trend in wholesale energy prices; however, he warned that energy prices remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. He urged individuals who are struggling with their energy bills to reach out to their suppliers for support, emphasizing the importance of customer engagement in accessing available assistance.
