An FBI agent has been suspended after reportedly refusing to partake in what has been labeled a “perp walk” for former FBI Director James Comey. Discussions among FBI leadership reportedly included sending officers in Kevlar vests to accompany Comey to his court arraignment scheduled for October 9 in Alexandria. This type of escort is typically used during high-profile arrests to publicly transport suspects to and from judicial venues.
Comey’s upcoming court appearance will formally present the charges against him, which include lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding. He is accused of providing false testimony to a Senate committee in 2020 regarding whether he authorized the leaking of classified information.
Comey previously led the FBI during a time marked by significant scrutiny, particularly related to Russian election interference in 2016 and Hillary Clinton’s email server usage. He has denied the allegations against him and expressed confidence in the judicial process. If convicted, he could face a maximum of five years in prison.
The charges were filed just days before the expiration of a five-year statute of limitations and shortly after the appointment of Lindsey Halligan, a prosecutor with ties to Trump, who has expressed dissatisfaction with perceived inaction against political adversaries.
