Eurostar has announced plans to introduce double-decker trains for the first time in its operations through the Channel Tunnel. The rail operator aims to order up to 50 new trains from manufacturer Alstom, which would expand its fleet by nearly one-third. This expansion includes a significant investment in its London depot.
The deal, valued at €2 billion (£1.74 billion), includes an order for 30 “Celestia” high-speed trains, with an option for an additional 20 units. The first six of these trains are expected to be operational by 2031. Each train will measure 200 meters in length, and when coupled together, they could form a service with approximately 1,080 seats.
These will be the first double-decker high-speed trains to operate through the Channel Tunnel, a significant milestone for Eurostar. The only previous double-decker train initiative in the UK was an experimental service that began in 1949.
Eurostar’s CEO, Gwendoline Cazenave, highlighted the introduction of these trains as a proud moment for the company, emphasizing their comfort. Last year, Eurostar carried approximately 19.5 million passengers, with ambitions to increase that number to 30 million. The new fleet is expected to support a 30% increase in services to London.
In addition to the new trains, Eurostar is investing €80 million to develop the Temple Mills depot in London, which is the only UK facility capable of accommodating the larger trains used in continental Europe. Currently, this depot is exclusively used by Eurostar, though various companies are exploring entry into the cross-Channel rail market, including Spanish start-up Evolyn and a venture involving Virgin and Uber.
The Office of Rail and Road is currently reviewing these access proposals, with a decision expected soon.
