A cargo plane has reportedly skidded off a runway at Hong Kong International Airport and landed in the sea, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The Emirates flight EK9788, operating as Aerotranscargo, was arriving from Dubai around 03:50 local time (19:50 GMT) when it collided with a vehicle on the airport’s north runway.
According to a statement from the Civil Aviation Department, two ground staff members fell into the sea as a result of the incident. They were rescued but later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, as reported by local media, including the public broadcaster RTHK. Four crew members aboard the plane were uninjured and were subsequently taken to a hospital for evaluation.
The north runway, where the incident occurred, is currently closed. However, the airport’s other two runways remain operational. The Airport Authority plans to hold a press conference at 10:00 local time (02:00 GMT) to provide further information.
In response to the incident, Hong Kong’s Government Flying Service has deployed helicopters over the affected area, and vessels from the Fire Services Department participated in the rescue efforts. Such incidents at Hong Kong International Airport are uncommon, as the airport is known for its strong safety record.
