Emily in Paris assistant director dies ‘suddenly’ during filming

A crew member on the popular series Emily in Paris, Diego Borella, has died during filming in Venice for the show’s fifth season. Borella, a 47-year-old assistant director, reportedly collapsed in front of colleagues while preparations for a scene were underway. Emergency medics were summoned to Hotel Danieli at around 19:00 local time but were unable to save him.

Paramount Television Studios, which produces the series for Netflix, confirmed Borella’s death and expressed condolences to his family and loved ones. The show’s medical staff reportedly attempted to treat Borella at the scene, but he did not survive. Following the incident, filming of Emily in Paris was temporarily halted.

The series, which debuted in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, stars Lily Collins as Emily Cooper, an American marketing executive navigating her professional and personal life in Paris. The fourth season, released in 2024, saw Emily moving to Rome for a new office location. Other cast members include Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, and Lucien Laviscount. The fifth season is expected to premiere later this year.

This incident raises questions about safety protocols on film sets, especially in light of the sudden nature of Borella’s passing.
