Libraries in East Yorkshire are organizing costume swap shops in preparation for Halloween. Residents can donate unwanted, Halloween-themed costumes and accessories until October 19. Following this, the items will be displayed for others to select and collect from October 20 until November 2.
The participating library branches include Bridlington Central, Withernsea, Haltemprice, Goole, South Cave, Beverley, and the Pocklington POCELA Centre. Librarian Jess McCarthy noted the initiative as a means to encourage participation in Halloween festivities while also benefiting the environment.
The costume swap scheme was first introduced in 2024, aiming to mitigate the environmental effects associated with single-use costumes and to support families facing financial challenges. Tara Foxon, another librarian, highlighted that Halloween can be costly for families needing new costumes. The initiative seeks to ensure that all community members can engage in Halloween activities without excessive spending. By facilitating the donation and exchange of costumes, the program aims to foster a sense of community involvement in local libraries.
