Duchess of York calls Epstein a ‘supreme friend’ in resurfaced email

Two newspapers, The Sun and the Mail on Sunday, have published an email reportedly sent by Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In the email, dated 2011, Ferguson referred to Epstein as a “supreme friend,” despite having publicly distanced herself from him shortly before.

A representative for the duchess explained that the email was sent in response to a threat from Epstein to sue her for defamation. In an interview from the same year, Ferguson characterized her association with Epstein as a “gigantic error of judgment” and stated that she “abhorred paedophilia” and any form of child abuse. She expressed regret for her past ties with Epstein, emphasizing that it was a serious mistake.

Following the interview, Ferguson contacted Epstein to clarify that she had not used the term “paedophilia” in reference to him. She acknowledged his feelings of betrayal and reiterated his historical generosity toward her and her family. The spokesperson emphasized that the email was written under pressure to mitigate Epstein’s threats and that the duchess stands by her previous condemnation of him.

Epstein was convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor and died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. He was known for his connections with influential figures, including politicians and royalty. The ongoing scrutiny of Epstein’s relationships has been heightened by the recent release of documents related to him by a U.S. congressional panel.

Additionally, allegations involving Ferguson’s former husband, Prince Andrew, have led to significant consequences, including his stepping back from royal duties. The inquiry into Epstein’s connections continues to prompt discussions about accountability among those associated with him.
