Cohere, a Canadian startup co-founded by Aidan Gomez, has launched its first reasoning large language model (LLM), named Command A Reasoning. Designed to streamline generative AI applications for enterprises, the model emphasizes flexibility, efficiency, and reasoning capabilities, targeting tasks like customer service, market research, scheduling, and data analysis in secure environments.
The model operates exclusively with text, although it can integrate with multimodal tools. It is particularly tailored for enterprises with extensive documentation and workflows, characterized by a capacity to handle up to 256,000 tokens on multi-GPU setups. The model is built on 111 billion parameters and is optimized for tool-use and multilingual performance, supporting 23 languages, including English, Spanish, and Arabic.
Cohere offers the model under a paid access model for enterprises, while researchers can use it for non-commercial purposes. The company does not publicly disclose pricing, citing a focus on bespoke customization. Recently valued at $6.8 billion, Cohere raised $500 million in its latest funding round.
The Command A Reasoning model includes a token budget feature, allowing users to manage the depth of reasoning based on their needs, thus optimizing performance and costs. In practical tests, the model has shown superior performance compared to other LLMs in enterprise settings, excelling in tasks involving multilingual benchmarks and comprehensive instruction following.
Cohere is positioning the model as suitable for high-stakes environments, aiming to mitigate risks associated with AI, such as overly cautious refusals and inappropriate content filtering. SAP SE is among the first major partners to adopt this model, enhancing its generative AI capabilities.
Currently, the model is available on the Cohere platform and for research use via Hugging Face. Interested enterprises can arrange private deployments through direct contact with Cohere.
