While traveling to a golf club, he posted on Truth Social about a homeless encampment he spotted, declaring, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,” and shared accompanying photos, including one featuring a man named Bill Theodie.
Following this post, Mr. Theodie was informed he would have to vacate the area as part of a crackdown on homelessness initiated by the administration. In a subsequent announcement, Trump stated he plans to remove homeless encampments from parks in the city, emphasizing his intention to clear “slums.”
An investigation by BBC Verify traced the location of the encampment back to the area seen in the president’s photos, approximately a 10-minute drive from the White House. Upon visiting the site, local officials were seen warning residents that they could soon be forced to relocate. Mr. Theodie, 66, who had lived there for years, noted that he was aware of Trump’s motorcade passing by during his time at the encampment.
On Thursday, Mr. Theodie and others were instructed to leave immediately. Local officials fast-tracked the removal process following Trump’s directive, a departure from the usual protocol, which typically provides advanced notice for such actions. Reports indicated that prior to the crackdown, homelessness numbers in the city had dropped significantly.
The White House has claimed it will facilitate placements in shelters for individuals on the streets and provide access to necessary services. However, there are concerns regarding the adequacy and safety of these options, as expressed by residents like Mr. Theodie, who prefers not to stay in shelters due to safety issues. Since the encampment removal, he has temporarily stayed in a motel.
