DJI’s new Osmo Mobile 8 adds pet tracking and 360-degree camera pans

DJI has introduced the Osmo Mobile 8, a follow-up to the Osmo Mobile 7 Pro, just eight months after its predecessor’s release. While the design remains largely consistent with previous models, the Osmo Mobile 8 adds new features, including the capability to rotate and pan a smartphone a full 360 degrees and compatibility with Apple’s DockKit. This compatibility potentially enhances its ability to track and follow subjects autonomously across various camera applications.

Currently, the Osmo Mobile 8 is only available in China, with no announced release dates for the US or international markets. DJI spokesperson Daisy Kong has stated that there is no estimated timeline for broader availability. The device is priced at 898 Chinese Yuan, approximately $126.

The Osmo Mobile 8 retains the Multifunctional Module found in the Osmo Mobile 7, which attaches to the side of a more secure magnetic phone mount. This module features an LED fill light, acts as a wireless receiver for DJI’s microphones, and enhances the gimbal’s tracking capabilities, now including pets like dogs and cats.

Furthermore, the battery life remains steady at up to 10 hours. The new model includes built-in tripod legs and an 8.4-inch telescoping extension rod, and it introduces a counterweight mount, ensuring balance even when using smartphones with heavier lenses or bulky attachments.
