Denmark has announced an additional $4.2 billion (£3.2 billion) in defense spending aimed at enhancing security in Greenland as well as the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. This funding will also cover the purchase of 16 F-35 fighter jets from the United States, bringing Denmark’s total fleet to 43 aircraft. Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that this initiative would strengthen the capabilities of the Danish Armed Forces in the region.
This increase in defense expenditure follows comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed a desire to acquire Greenland, citing its strategic importance for national and economic security. Greenland, which remains under Danish sovereignty, has been highlighted as critical for its location and resources.
The new defense package was developed in collaboration with the governments of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The funding will support the acquisition of two Arctic ships, maritime patrol aircraft, drones, and early warning radar systems. Additionally, a new Arctic command headquarters will be established in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, along with a new military unit to operate under the Joint Arctic Command.
The Chief of Defence, Michael Hyldgaard, stated that the Armed Forces’ roles include ensuring security throughout the Kingdom and, when necessary, defending Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark in cooperation with NATO. However, he did not specify potential adversaries.
Plans also include funding for an undersea cable to connect Greenland with Denmark. The Danish defense ministry’s statements emphasized deterrence and NATO responsibilities without explicitly mentioning the U.S. or Russia, despite rising tensions.
Greenland, which houses a U.S. radar base from the Cold War era, has garnered increasing attention for its natural resources, including rare earth minerals. Its strategic position between North America and Russia further amplifies its importance in global security discussions.
