Denmark has implemented a ban on all civilian drone flights this week in anticipation of a European Union summit in Copenhagen, according to a statement from the country’s transport minister. The decision aims to streamline security operations for police in light of recent drone sightings that have caused concern. Authorities stated they could not afford “foreign drones creating uncertainty and disruption.”
The ban comes amidst reports of “drone incidents” across several European countries, including sightings above Danish military sites. In response, defense ministers from ten EU nations have agreed to establish a “drone wall,” while NATO has increased surveillance across the Baltic region.
Ahead of the summit, Danish police are reportedly on heightened alert. The restriction on drone flights will remain in effect until October 3, with potential penalties for violations including fines or imprisonment of up to two years. Denmark currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU.
Since September 22, unidentified drones have been active in Denmark, leading to temporary closures of both Copenhagen and Oslo airports. Aalborg and Billund airports also suspended operations last week due to drone activity.
Authorities are still working to identify those behind the drone flights. The Danish defense minister referred to the situation as a “hybrid attack” part of a “systematic operation.” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged ongoing investigations into the origins of the drone incursions, mentioning the possibility of Russian involvement, which Moscow has denied.
Similar incidents have been reported in Norway and Romania, where drone activity has prompted diversions and heightened security measures. Romania recently enacted legislation empowering air force pilots to take down unidentified aircraft and drones.
