Graham Greene, a Canadian actor known for his roles in films such as “Dances With Wolves,” has passed away at the age of 73, according to his manager, Gerry Jordan. Greene reportedly died of natural causes.
As a member of the Oneida Nation from the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, Greene’s contributions to film earned him recognition, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s 1990 film “Dances With Wolves.” In a career that spanned several decades, he transitioned to acting in theatre in the UK during the 1970s after working various jobs, including draftsman, civil technologist, steelworker, and rock-band crew member.
Greene acknowledged the importance of theatre in shaping his acting skills in a 2012 interview, stating that it provides a foundation for character development. He emphasized that the discipline learned from theatre is vital for actors transitioning to film. He also highlighted his marriage to Hilary Blackmore as a pivotal moment in his life.
Greene’s career included notable roles in various films. Beyond “Dances With Wolves,” he appeared in “Thunderheart” (1992) as tribal officer Walter Crow Horse and in “The Green Mile” (1999) as Arlen Bitterbuck, a Native American on death row. He also featured in “Die Hard With A Vengeance” (1995), “Maverick” (1994), “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” (2009), and “Wind River” (2017).
Throughout his career, Greene received numerous accolades, including the 2004 Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Academy of Canadian Film and Television. He was also inducted into the Order of Canada in 2016, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.
