Police in the Czech Republic have arrested the driver of a racing car resembling a Formula 1 vehicle, which has been observed on the motorway multiple times since 2019. The red car, adorned in Ferrari livery, was tracked to a property in Buk, located approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Prague, following a recent sighting.
A video captured earlier showed the car driving along the D4 motorway and stopping for petrol. The driver, a 51-year-old man, was detained at his residence after initially refusing to exit the vehicle. Footage recorded by local media depicted the driver seated in front of his garage, asserting that police were trespassing on private property. Ultimately, he agreed to be taken to a police station for questioning while still in his racing outfit and helmet, but reportedly declined to answer any questions upon arrival.
A man claiming to be the driver’s son stated that their home was surrounded by numerous police vehicles and a helicopter, which he described as a disproportionate response to what he referred to as a “supposed traffic violation.” He mentioned that police allegedly observed them towing the racing car shortly after it was reported to have been speeding on the motorway.
Police initially encountered the individual in 2019 after images and videos of the car began circulating online. They contacted the vehicle’s owner, who denied driving it on the motorway; it remains unclear whether this is the same individual now in custody. The use of a helmet in the videos had previously hindered identification.
While the vehicle has often been labeled as a “Ferrari Formula 1 car,” it has been confirmed by auto.cz to be a Dallara GP2/08, a racing car designed for the GP2 Series, which has since been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship. The driver now faces potential penalties, including a fine for operating the car on the motorway without proper headlights, indicators, or registration plates, alongside the possibility of license suspension.
