However, experts warn that these devices may be ineffective at best and dangerous at worst, often failing to meet basic electrical safety standards. Siobhan Blagbrough, a financial crime manager at Ocean Finance, indicates that such products typically involve scams disguised as legitimate energy-saving solutions. Victims may pay for these gadgets only to receive substandard items or, in some cases, nothing at all.
These plug-in devices are often marketed online through social media with claims of significant cost reductions on energy bills. Despite selling for under £10, they may introduce safety risks as they are frequently manufactured with poor quality components. An investigation by the consumer group Which? found several such devices available online that did not comply with UK safety guidelines.
Concerns about these products arise particularly during periods of heightened energy expenses, as scammers exploit this vulnerability with misleading advertisements and promotions. Victims may encounter fraudulent communications, such as fake energy rebate texts or unauthorized individuals posing as representatives from energy regulatory bodies.
To avoid falling victim to such scams, consumers are advised to be cautious about online purchases, especially those arising from advertisements. Reports of misleading claims should be directed to the relevant platforms and local trading standards offices. For improving energy efficiency at home, experts recommend sticking to established methods like enhancing insulation, adjusting boiler settings, or using smart thermostats.
