Rail passengers are advised to anticipate “significant disruption” due to CrossCountry’s reduced timetable over the upcoming bank holiday. On Saturday, there will be no train services, as members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) are set to strike. While services on Monday will also be limited, there remains uncertainty regarding possible cancellations on Sunday.
On Monday, specific routes—including those between Birmingham and Reading, as well as routes connecting Leicester to Cambridge and Stansted Airport—will not operate, with only a minimal service scheduled for the South West and north of York. Additionally, scheduled engineering work in the West Midlands could further affect travel times for available journeys.
CrossCountry’s managing director, Shiona Rolfe, expressed disappointment over the RMT’s announcement of strikes, acknowledging the significant impact on passengers during a busy holiday period. She stated that the company is committed to reaching a resolution with the RMT and is open to continuing discussions.
An RMT representative noted that the union’s membership voted decisively in favor of industrial action, highlighting ongoing discussions with management aimed at achieving a negotiated settlement. Union sources indicated that the strike stems from allegations that CrossCountry has not honored agreements concerning staffing, safety, and pay.
Passengers are urged to check their travel arrangements in advance, consider traveling before or after the bank holiday, or seek full refunds for their tickets. As the situation evolves, travelers are encouraged to remain updated on service information.
