Costco to sell weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy at half-price | US news

Costco has announced a partnership with the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk to provide anti-obesity GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic and Wegovy, to its members at approximately half the standard price. Under this arrangement, members with a valid prescription can purchase a four-week supply of these injectable drugs for $499. This offer is available exclusively for those paying out of pocket, as many insurance plans do not cover these medications.

The decision to offer these medications comes amid rising prices and limited supply for GLP-1 drugs, which has led some individuals to seek less expensive, compounded alternatives. This trend has raised concerns and calls for increased federal oversight regarding the distribution and availability of these drugs.

David Moore, the U.S. president of Novo Nordisk, emphasized the importance of providing authentic versions of Wegovy and Ozempic, noting the aim to ensure patient safety and care. Both Ozempic and Wegovy include semaglutide, an injectable drug used for managing type 2 diabetes and facilitating weight loss by mimicking the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which plays a role in regulating appetite and insulin secretion.

Public awareness of semaglutide has surged, with a recent survey indicating that over 80% of Americans are somewhat familiar with the drug, and around one-third have either used it or shown interest in trying it. Novo Nordisk reports that more than 200,000 Wegovy prescriptions are filled weekly in the U.S., but the company is contending with competition from pharmacies and clinics offering cheaper alternatives.

As of August 2025, nearly 12% of the American population has reportedly used GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, with usage notably higher among women aged 50 to 64. Costco’s entry into this market may enhance access and demand for these medications, particularly as numerous health plans still deny coverage for them.
