Copilot on Windows can now create Office documents and connect to Gmail

Microsoft is enhancing its Copilot app on Windows, introducing features that allow users to create documents directly from chat sessions and connect to Gmail and Outlook accounts. The rollout of the updated Copilot is currently available to Windows Insiders and will eventually be accessible to all Windows 11 users.

The new functionality of Copilot enables the creation of various document types, including Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDFs, all initiated from the chat interface. Microsoft’s Copilot team explained that users can convert ideas, notes, and data into shareable documents simply by providing a prompt, eliminating the need for additional tools or steps. Furthermore, when responding with 600 characters or more, Copilot offers a default export button to send text directly to one of the supported document types.

Additionally, users have the option to link their Copilot to Outlook or Gmail accounts, allowing the AI assistant to retrieve content from these online accounts. For example, users could request Copilot to locate invoices from a specific company in their inbox or obtain a contact’s email address. This connection requires users to actively opt in and link their Gmail or Outlook account through the app’s connectors section. Other supported integrations include OneDrive, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts.

The launch of this updated version of Copilot precedes the anticipated release of a new OneDrive app by Microsoft next year, which is expected to feature an improved gallery view, AI-driven slideshows, and enhanced editing capabilities.
