Clashes between police and Gen Z protesters in Peru leave one dead

Clashes between anti-government protesters and riot police in Lima, Peru, have resulted in one fatality and over 100 injuries, including numerous police officers. The protests occurred shortly after José Jerí was inaugurated as the interim president, following the impeachment of his predecessor, Dina Boluarte.

The demonstrations, primarily involving young Peruvians, are driven by calls for action against rising crime and corruption in the country. President Jerí indicated that the protest had been infiltrated by individuals seeking to incite violence and announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Eduardo Ruiz Sáenz, the deceased individual. Jerí expressed regret over Ruiz Sáenz’s death but did not provide specific details regarding its cause.

Congress member Ruth Luque reported preliminary information suggesting that Ruiz Sáenz, a hip-hop artist, died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Witnesses claimed to have seen the artist shot by an individual they identified as a plainclothes police officer. Jerí reiterated that the investigation would aim to determine what transcribed objectively and identify those responsible.

José Jerí, a member of the conservative Somos Perú party, assumed office following Boluarte’s impeachment, which was based on claims of “permanent moral incapacity.” He is the seventh president of Peru in eight years and was selected to complete Boluarte’s term until elections set for April of next year.

Protestors have been vocal in demanding a significant political shift, with thousands calling for a “clean slate” and urging government efforts to combat crime, particularly extortion by gangs targeting drivers. Young activists have organized protests across major cities, requesting that Jerí resign in favor of an independent candidate. Criticism from this group has included accusations that Jerí’s party previously supported Boluarte, whose tenure ended amid decreasing public approval ratings.

Boluarte remains in Peru, stating she will stay pending investigations into allegations of power abuse, which she denies.
