Google is set to roll out a new feature for the Chrome browser on both Android and desktop platforms that will automatically disable notifications from websites that users have been ignoring. This incorporates elements of the existing Safety Check feature, which already manages permissions for camera access and location tracking.
The new auto-revocation function is an extension of an existing feature on Android that allows users to easily unsubscribe from website notifications with a single tap. However, it is important to note that this feature will not affect notifications from web apps installed on the device. Permissions will be disabled only for sites that send numerous notifications without significant user engagement. Google reports that less than one percent of web notifications in Chrome receive any user interaction, suggesting that many notifications may be causing more distraction than benefit.
According to Google, initial testing of this feature showed a notable decrease in notification overload, with little impact on the total number of notification clicks. The company also indicated that websites with fewer notifications may experience an increase in user engagement.
Users of Chrome will have the option to fully disable the auto-revocation feature if they choose. They can also restore notifications from specific sites by visiting those sites to re-enable them or by adjusting permissions through the Safety Check feature. Google has been approached for confirmation on when this feature will be available to users.
