Charlie Kirk suspect confessed in note to roommate, prosecutors allege

Tyler Robinson, 22, is facing seven charges, including aggravated murder, in connection with the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors allege that Robinson confessed to the crime in a message to his romantic partner, leaving a note under a keyboard that stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.” Robinson is currently being held without bail at the Utah County Jail.

During a court appearance via video link, prosecutors presented evidence, including text messages allegedly exchanged between Robinson and his roommate. In one message, Robinson reportedly stated he shot Kirk due to having “had enough of his hatred.” Kirk was shot once from a rooftop while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Prosecutors have also indicated they will pursue the death penalty in this case. The shooting occurred during a public event, raising additional concerns as Kirk was speaking about mass shootings involving transgender individuals when the shot was fired. Reports indicate that the bullet narrowly missed other individuals, including children.

Robinson was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt. He had not entered a plea and has not confessed to police. Prosecutors presented a range of evidence, including DNA found on the rifle believed to have been used in the murder. The weapon is thought to be a bolt-action rifle that once belonged to Robinson’s grandfather.

Robinson’s parents reportedly became suspicious of his involvement after watching news footage of the shooting and confronting their son. They eventually persuaded him to surrender. Throughout their communications, Robinson expressed feelings of guilt and hinted at wishing to keep his actions secret. His roommate is cooperating with investigators and has been identified as transgender, which has been noted in the context of the case. However, the prosecutor did not confirm if Kirk was specifically targeted due to his views on transgender issues, stating that the determination would be left to a jury.
